Getting a new pair of sunglasses. :3

Getting a new pair of sunglasses?

I know, anyone who's just read the title would be going - What? Did she really randomly post about her new pair of sunglasses on her school blog?
So, let me answer that question first - No, I'm not literally talking about buying new accessories.

I just wanted to find a fresh, new name for 'perspective' - which, isn't the most attractive word in the world. If you think about it, I definitely think you can find similarities. When you try on a pair of black sunglasses, you see the world from a more grayer, darker view, whereas, when you try on a pair with shades of brown, it looks much more warm and hazy, and before you try them on, you never know what you might see through them.

Today, in english class, we watched a news report about the Super Trawler - the gigantic fishing boat near Australia, that is under the spotlight of debate. If I were to summarize the issue; the Super Trawler is a humongous fishing boat that has taken place out at the deep seas near Australia which has a big net laying open underwater causing tons of fish to get caught as the ship moves around. It catches as much as 20 buses of fish a day and 2/3's of the ship is occupied by a factory which immediately packs the fish after they are caught - this enables them to stay away from port for a month.

There are two significant perspectives to this story; the company and the consumers (the people who earn profit), and the fishermen, government and the ecologists (the people who are at loss). Today in class, our class discussed as a whole whether the Super Trawler is a good thing or not *the discussion. But this still restricted us to limited thinking space about different views, so we did another activity.

We broke up into smaller groups of about 5 people and each of them were secretly told of a person. Then, we were supposed to think about what this person would have to say about the Super Trawler and how it affects her. I think this was a great activity because we were assigned of individuals that we never thought of to be influenced like housewives 'with a low income' and it gave us a chance to go deeper into the topic. (I never knew those dusty, purple sunglasses would make my surroundings seem so different. :P)

Through this activity I found that everyone has an opinion to everything and that nobody's thoughts should be ignored.

  1. I absolutely love this post. :D The way that you used sunglasses to catch peoples attention instead of just "perspective' or "points of view" like you mentioned was a really, really cool idea. The whole piece was like a giant simile! My favourite :P

It was really well written and organised, so awesome job overall. :D :)

    1. Thank you. That was a really sweet piece of feedback. This whole comment was like a giant smile! (heheh :D credits to you for the line!) This might sound really coincidental but I actually got the idea from your post last time about the mountains. :) x

  2. This is a great post! I completely agree with Hazel and love the introduction. I really liked the way you made "perspectives" into a pair of sunglasses. You transformed the word "perspective" in my mind forever. I loved the way you wrote about the english class in your own point of view with a great conclusion that nobody should be ignored!

  3. Love the metaphor, Molly! How do you come up with such warm, honest posts? You knew exactly what the reader would think after reading the title, and effectively conveyed your thoughts!
